Over time the structural integrity of a drain can and does deteriorate. Ground movement can cause cracks and fractures allowing the escape of water in the subsoil. This can wash away the pipe bed causing further damage and at worst cause the pipe to collapse. Another very common cause of structural damage is root ingress into the pipe.
